There is no functional reason at all.  I think some very old museum
coils (Griffith Park Observatory) were built with conical secondaries,
and folks tend to blindly duplicate what they see without questioning
why.  Since it's much harder to wind a conical secondary, folks get
smarter and use conventional cylindrical coils when you talk about
larger coils.  Conical coils do have a cool retro-look, but not worth
the trouble IMHO.
