What kind of distortion? (would a 555 type oscillator work?)
Does it have to tune that entire range with one knob? (or can you 
switch ranges)

The venerable XR2206 (or whatever the part number is now... they 
still make it though) is a good choice:
wide range VCO, puts out sine, square, and triangle.

There are a huge number of kits out there using this part or a 
similar one. (e.g. the Elenco FG500)
