At such a cost differential, couldn't a design be made that doubles the IGBT
parts count (sorry, not my bailey wick)?

It only has 1/2 the die area but at that price it is worth a try.  It is 
not like the big ones are blowing up.  IR is quoting $28.75 for the 
IRGPS60B120KDP these days!!
