Re: [TCML] 1,000uF 250V pulse cap needed

RE-flash caps.

I did take a look, though they are cheap, they are just electrolytic with a fast burn out life... I could buy a 1,000uF 450V cap ranted at a high current pulse, though the peek heat was like 2KW at 100V, RMS heat figures probably in the order of 50watts. Though even if you imagine 100bps at 2KW, its why I wanted to avoid electrolytics.

I remember a small audio amplifier I built some years ago where I used pretty heavy 4,700uF smoothing caps, and after about 30mins run time (high bass power) which was probably "thud" twice a second... well they cap got so hot it was smoking and you sure couldn't touch it. Small value caps just used to explode. Some caps even though not physcially big can sound like a bomb going off, fill the room full of smoke which stinks for days.. Now that was just bass notes, maybe twice a second, into a 8ohm speaker. Now imagine a larger value cap 10,000uF running up to 200V into 0.003ohm at 100times a second being discharged 100% (not just filtering ripples in a PSU)........!

Overall, I think its best to avoid electrolytics for pulse applications. If they are a good spec , or want fast burn out, or want to risk filling your room full of smoke then sure... though Id like to be able to run my coil for more than 5mins without the risk of smoke... plenty of other things to generate smoke without the caps ;-)

RE-MOTOR RUN CAPS
I can't find any real spec on these, other than voltage and value.

RE-DC LINK, these look the best so far. According to my current simulations, I will be pushed to get more than 5V/uS, 5A/uS, The DC link caps are rated at 14V/uS up to 1KA, I think my peak value was 800A.. so currently these look the best option so far.

Chris,

I was thinking that. Just go to a camera shop and tell them you want some
throw away cameras for your hobby... They remove the film for development
and recycle the rest. Be sure to discharge them, they hold a charge a long
time and have a nasty bite!

Chris-

Howzabout photoflash caps? $10 worth of these gets you where you need

The tricky thing might be getting them to survive the duty cycle of
100-500 pulses per second. But cheap enough to give it a try!
