Actually it depends on what you are going to use it for, 6 inch is most likely enough for smaller coils only (you are going to use this for TC I guess ;) ), however this depends on it's radius. There is no reason to use such an expensive material by the way, a 1.5-2 meter steel rod is already a good ground. Better pour some water so the soil around the rod would get in a better contact with it (I recommed at least five rods for a constant ground however). You can also use a metal sheet or any other big metal object (if you want it fast and easy then just find any big piece of metal junk and bury it somewhere with a wire attached). Afterwards, check the ground - you can just connect a lightbulb between the hot socket output and your new ground terminal. MAKE SURE OF THE LOW GROUND CABLE INDUCTANCE HOWEVER!
