MIT is a tremendous resource for free learning materials. I've been going through their machine shop video series, and have learned a ton of new techniques to aid in my meager attempts at cobbling things together.

Everything you need to know is there. Free, Quality, and Easy is left to the beholder :)

It really is nice because you can look at just a specific topic easily or you can scan through the would thing and decide if maybe your calling is basket weaving instead :D

There is also CRC's Electrical engineering handbook by Dorf from CRC press.

If your are just new and mostly curious, you might look at used book stores for books around the mid 60's to mid 70's. They have a lot of good information and concentrate more on the fun art of it. They were also written before everything got all complicated. Their price tag is also vastly more pleasant.
