Hi Neal,

Strike rails should "not" be a closed loop. If it is a closed loop, the strike rail will act as a shorted single turn inductor and will absorb a large amount of energy. The strike rail should have a gap (two or three inches between ends) and this will "open the circuit" preventing the large energy absorption.
