Yes, even after coils are wound and have served well over the years, it's still a good idea to wipe them down before running. Every now and then, I use soap and water and wash the coil inside and out. Don't just remove the dust, also remove the corrosive residues.

Antonio is correct.  Acrylic is an excellent HV insulator as long as someone
with slightly sweaty hands has not handled it.  Detectives rely on this
principal to get fingerprints for their investigations.
