I just looked more at your site. I'm a machinist too! I have a small harbour freight lathe, $600, and at my Dad's house we managed to packrat two mills and two lathes! We have an Enco, a Bridgeport, a 1940s Shelton Lathe (12x36 or so) and an Enco lathe. Originally we had one of each, but a friend was getting rid of a machine shop that my Dad did a lot of work for in the past. He is more into AK-47s than Tesla Coils. We also have a foundry that isn't setup, my grandfather built it - used to work at US Steel. We did some brass casting, and I am going nuts to get my dad to try and set it up again. I would love to cast copper or aluminum spark gap heat sinks!
I love the 4" torroids you built. Damn metal is getting so expensive lately, I ended up reverting back to 6" polished copper spheres for $20 each out of connecticut. I have some 3" bar stock, 6061, maybe I'll try making one!! I actually need a few for Kinraide experiments, he was using them as funny sort of static rectifiers. Not so efficient for that purpose, but they make neat sparks. Also like the X-Ray cable you used for the connections. Nice stuff!!
You mentioned vacuum gaps, I have some tungsten carbide water jet nozzles here that I have kept forever to try and build a compressed air gap. They have a .032" bore, 3/8" diameter. I suppose suction might also be used for these. I normally use stationary tungsten gaps, but one of these days I have to get a little modern... I'll have to dig them out and see how many I have. Maybe they would be more useful for you than me.
The rotary gap on your site looks nice. You can tell you're a machinist. You know, the early pioneers were machinists too. These guys today are full of their theories and math, but a well-machined coil will always outperform a dodgy one, even if the coiler has a million formulas that tell otherwise! I never get over some of these arrogant guys that criticise everyone's work and then screw around with drier duct and duct tape to finish their coils. Well, I guess they use what they have. But I can't imagine not having at least a lathe to play with...
