I also used a EHV corona gradient ring like yours to make our "ring of fire" (see:  http://www.audiotesla.org/images/Zotzilla%20Pictures/Telluride/IMG_5200.jpg ) 
I wasn't sure how well it would work on top af a tesla coil. Sounds like it does quite well for you. Tell me; is the coil you're using it on a solid state coil or spark gap? We used the ring of fire on one of Dr. Spark's solid state coils and were actually able to "freeze-frame" the arcs by carefully adjusting the input frequency of the coil. And, if you slightly "tilted" the frequency a bit slower or faster, the arcs would slowly start going backwards or forwards, as though you were a little out of sync. Quit a cool effect.
