Don't need a step up transformer for the full power. Use the boost/buck 
style connection with a low voltage (20V) transformer. Primary across 
the line, secondary in series with the line.
2.4kW @ 120V is about 20Amps.. so all you need is a 20V 20A transformer, 
which is about 400VA.  They're a standard electrical supply house thing, 
or there's lots of 24VAC out 120V in transformers around for 
applications like sprinkler controls, landscape lighting, low voltage 
lightning, etc.
