I use drawer pulls in my apparatus. It's fairly easy to tell zinc from real brass; solid brass is much heavier. Also, rap a zinc item and it sounds dull, like plastic. Brass has a clearer, more metallic ring when struck.

But be advised that 99% of the hardware store "drawer pulls" are die-cast zinc, with an incredibly thin lacquered "brass finish". The will erode very quickly if they ever actually see an arc.

You can buy the brass spheres from McMaster-Carr Company.

You can also get some acceptable ones used for drawer pull knobs.  Check
your Home Depot store.
