Re: [TCML] Fan Shroud Toroid

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the model of this fan was. I bought it from Walmart several years ago for a whopping $29. You can safely bet that it was made in the People's Republic of China. After looking at many fans to replace this one, it appears that most of them are made in a similar fashion. Many of them aren't rounded, though, and are relatively square around the sides. As much as good toroids cost, at $29, it might be worth buying these cheap fans just to get the motor cover. I noticed that around this time of year, Walmart begins to close out their fan inventory and have many really inexpensive fans like this one.

I do think it is definitely worth your while to take the cover off of any ceiling fan that has failed and is being removed from service to see whether or not it can be easily modified to create a toroid the way I did with this one. I have never tried hosting before but I will be glad to take some pictures and put them where everyone can take a look. Can someone recommend a place to put the pictures?

Great discovery!

Can you pass along the make and model number of the fan? Then, we can all
do our toroid shopping at Home Depot!!

I just made an interesting toroid from the cover off of a ceiling fan
motor. The ceiling fan died and I disassembled the motor to see what had
failed. My son picked up the cover and remarked that it resembled a toroid
from a Tesla Coil. I agreed and used a rubber hammer to knock the center
portion down flat so that it did make an actual toroid shape. At first, it
looked more like a flying saucer. I now have a nice shiny brass colored
steel toroid that is approximately 2.5" by 12".
