Actually, the Faraday Effect is an actual effect not having much to do with 
Faraday Cages at all.    

See here - polarized light traveling parallel to magnetic flux is angled
such that a polarized detector could see the event occur:

Is somewhat similar to the Zeeman Effect where magnetic field affects the
energy in atoms that affect spectrum analysis such as on stars wherebye
scientists measure magnetic field affects at a distance.
