I've bought two Chinese variacs over the years.  The price was right, but it didn't turn out paricularly well with either of them.

Altho your links don't work I know exactly what you are talking about.I 
ought one about 6 years ago and haven't had any problems yet with.It is not 
 powerstat ,not nearly as smooth. The shaft bearings that run the wiper are 
s loose as the proverbial goose. Hey but what the heck it works just don't 
xpect quality..Hopes this helps ...Binny
