[TCML] Tesla Coil Tuning with LEDs and Function Generator

Hi all, this week I've be using a function generator and instructions  
from the archives on how to tune a coil with led lights. Measuring the  
secondary was easy, but the way the primary setup was described was  
confusing. After one shorts the spark gap do you hook the generator's  
leads on either side of the MMC (with LEDs in place) or do you hook  
one lead to the tap point "clamp" and one to where every the tap point  
will be on the copper tubing? And am i looking for the brightest LED  
"setting"?

Also for a bipolar coil can i just drive a detuned primary with the  
generator and have the LEDs hooked up to the two electrodes on the  
secondary?
