Re: [TCML] Voltage - Gap

I have run Maxwell Laboratories model 37093 high voltage pulse capacitors for years with no ill effects. They are rated at 45 kV, .02uF and I use them in a 15kV system. My Maxwells are not directly under my primary however. I have run for over 30 minutes continuous with no problems in a approx. 3KW system (line - 120V@ 26Amp). Love these Maxwells for both rotary synch gaps and static spark gaps. I always thought the 35kV Maxwells were to low a voltage rating for 15kV systems even if they were higher pulse rate.

Also, as I understand it, these capacitors have a lifetime limit on the number of total discharges. So far no problems after many years. I run mine in a horizontal configuration although I am not sure if that matter. An air bubble inside many of these units, swashing sound when moved, does not seem to be a problem.

THIS one is the 37667, for your viewing enjoyment.

Here's another picture of my stupidity.
This is a 37667 all blowed up during my trying to get my first DR coil working. This one, I think I can safely say, died due to overcurrent/switching.

After seeing Dave Leddon's DR, I decided I might be better off emulating someone who actually knew what he was doing, and switched to using banks of those Aerovox RBPS snubber caps.

Never had a problem with those at any power input level I could muster ...

Cheers,
Joe
