[TCML] Protecting a power supply

I have an antique induction coil (Ruhmkorff type) that I'd like to use for experiments. It works prefectly well off a 6 volt lantern battery, but I'd like to power it off an adjustable, plug-in power supply. How can I protect the power supply from the coil's backlash? Would the same sort of filter used to protect NSTs from a Tesla coil work, or are the requirements different because of frequency and voltage differences?

The power supply is similar to this one: http://www.cynmar.com/ProductDetail/02219348_Multivolt-Regulated-Power-Supply-2-Amp
