Thanks Brian, and all who have responded,

Actually, I'm not sure that there will be room to wrap a damp towel around the shaft, as there is not really much clearance between the armature, the front bearings and that flywheel assembly. Thanks for the advice though and I will probably be pulling out the propane blowtorch on the flywheel next time I have time to fool with it. And yes, I think the consensus of this list is in agreement with me that this is definitely a left-hand threaded shaft and flywheel pulley.
