They have occasionally been used in wind tunnels to depict airflow in a sort
of horizontal Jacob's ladder arrangement where the arc sweeps over the test
object, but I don't know if they are used that way today.

Any good information required about tesla coils today? where they are
used?
The primary two uses are
Education
To demonstrate various and sundry HV phenomena, although a Van deGraaff
generator might be better for some of them.
Entertainment
TCs are used in the Entertainment industry as a live special effect
(e.g. part of a stage presentation, or part of a theme park ride) or to
generate "elements" that are composited into other footage.
And don't forget the combination of the two.. something electrical and
entertaining to get students excited.
A few suggestions would be good, with a bit of description.
Thanks Matthew
