Re: [TCML] First notch quenching?

Hi Scott,

If I remember correctly Bert Hickman (or was it Mark R.?) once
viewed the quenching of Ed Wingate's magnifier using an oscilloscope
and it quenched on the first notch at high power, but on the second
or 3rd notch at lower powers.

Apparently large high powered coils with long streamers
draw out so much power quickly enough to permit first notch quenching.
Ed's 12 point series rotary probably helps too in that regard.

I don't know if other coilers with large coils have observed their quenching
on an o'scope. In any case it seems possible to get first notch
quenching even in a spark gap coil under certain conditions.

I think the DRSSTC's can be forced to quench at first notch,
but I'll let others speak about that.

Cheers,
John

Subject: [TCML] First notch quenching?

Greetings folks,
A bit of a theoretical question, I'm a bit rusty so thanks for your
patience, is it still impossible to quench on first notch? I was trying to
explain the whole "notching" concept to someone and it occurred to me, if
an IGBT or other switch was inserted to bypass the tank capacitor enitrely
and physically disconnect the primary immediately after first notch, it
would greatly impede the tendency to transfer energy back into the primary,
as it would no longer be at the same resonate frequency. I feel like I
might be missing something, or maybe not, or perhaps even it doesn't matter
as such a feat is impossible with current semiconductor technology. At any
rate just felt like putting this out there, help me to remember if you
could folks.

Scott Bogard.
