I use steel pins stuck through copper sheet formed around a 2 inch length of vinyl tubing (to keep the pins secure). All copper sheet edges are folded over with a slight roundess on the edges. Anything not facing the belt is wrapped up in electrical tape.

ive heard brass screen is the best but i cant find it anymore and aluminum screen doesnt work as well.

We used a few square inches of steel window screen held between 2
screwed together bars of aluminum. We combed the screen so it was very
pointy and stuck out.
