Re: [TCML] MMC reference check.

James,

Your calculation is partially correct. I am presuming that your 15 KV NST is an RMS voltage rating. If so, then your peak voltage is actually 1.414 x 15 KV = 21.2 KV. This should be the minimum rating for your series capacitor chain. However you should build in a safety factor above that for over-voltage conditions. I don't use MMCs for my coil so I can't really say what that factor should be. It all depends on what level of risk you are comfortable with. For my Maxwell capacitor based coil I use a factor of 3. That could get expensive for a MMC array however. From what I have read on here over the years, people seem to run these MMC capacitors right to the limit with no safety factor and rely on the self-healing characteristics of the individual capacitors to take care of over-voltage conditions. I am certain that others on here who use MMCs will weigh-in on what the proper safety factor should be.

Ok, the old adage about measuring thrice make cutting nice comes to mind here. I have 25 942c6p15k-f in series. These are rated 600v each. Now my father in law who worked as an electrician for NASA and Inland Steel, said that my configuration won’t be enough for a 15kv NST. With my calculator it said 600x25=15000. But he said each one has to be rated for 15kv each. I don’t want a $50. Firecracker. I also have 25 1M resistors, one for each cap.

Please advise.
