I did try that to an extreme degree, even sealing it with HV silicone
(didn't try epoxy yet tho...) The problem is at the chrage rate I'm using
it always ended up reducing performance, and after sealing it I couldn't
open the terminal anymore. It almost seems like the electric field is
distoring around that area and reducing the overall charge capacity - I
have no idea if that's even possible just a theory.
Instead I found bowls with no lip and a folded top, even without insulation
it worked far better than I could achieve with the insulated version. It
suprised me just how much better performance I can achieve using a nice
flush join between bowls.
I wonder if you could fold the lip over without distorning the bowl itself?
I have very little experience in metal work and I don't have the equipment
to try it, but that would at least bring it in a little.
Another tip I've mentioned before is to *not* use a conductive Corona ring.
I found out purely by accident that I could make an amazingly effective
Corona ring by wrapping the main PVC tube with 1" wide rubber belt until
about 1" deep, then wrapping that tight with electrical tape. I just sit
the lower bowl directly on top of that, and it had a tremendous impact on
the maximum charge capacity. In combination with the flush center join my
VDG became a nasty beast like I've not seen before.
I don't know why that works so well, if I had access to a high quality
copper Corona ring I might find better overall performance. Pretty much
everything I'm doing is guesswork on top of what I've learned elsewhere :)
