400 hz does not need as much iron in transformers or large capacities for power supplies. Less filtering was required for the DC at higher frequencies. This meant smaller component sizes and less weight for the avionics to help conserve weight in the aircraft. This meant they could have higher payloads and less fuel waste lugging "necessary" parts of the aircraft.
