Re: [TCML] **External Email** Romex ballast coil

Actually, I believe the "parallel" wiring noted in your second example is still series wired, but instead of both series wires (black and white) being wound in the same direction (the first example), the series wires are instead counterwound (the black wire is wound in opposite direction of the white wire). True "parallel" wiring would connect black #1 with white #2, and black #1 with white #2.

For a Romex equivalent ballast, try this:

Leave wire on spool,

Strip end #1 of black wire and attach to your circuit,

Strip end #2 of black wire and end #1 of white wire, connect these together (in series).

Strip end #2 of white wire and attach to the other side of your circuit.

The inductance will be additive.

Your net inductance will equal = Lblack + Lwhite + Lmutual = Ltotal

Just watch your total voltage drop across the series coil.

Note: Romex AC wire is rated 300 or 600 volts, depending on the supplier, where speaker wire is only rated for 50 or 150 volts.

But, If you:

Leave wire on spool,

Strip end #1 of black wire and attach to your circuit,

Strip end #1 of white wire and attach to the other side of your circuit,

Strip end #2 of black wire and end #2 of white wire, connect these together (in parallel)

The inductances will cancel, leaving just pure resistive wire. This is called bifilar winding.

Your net inductance will equal = Lblack - Lwhite = Ltotal = 0
