Many thanks to Terry, Bert and Paul for explaining the base impedance
thing.  I had no idea it was so complicated,  but it does make sense now.
The resonator that I am currently using for my SSTC has a measured base
impedance of 450 ohms at resonance !  It uses many turns of thin wire on a
cardboard tube,  and has a high resonant frequency,  so I guess it's Q is
abysmal !!  Never mind ;-)
Anyhow,  I am going to wind a new coil which will be short, fat, and use
less turns of much thicker wire in order to get the same inductance.
Hopefully this will lower the base impedance.  I will let you know the
result.
Paul,  thanks for the tips about matching with a coupled primary
winding.  I am using a primary coil to match to my solid state driver,
although the primary-secondary coupling needs to be very tight to get good
power transfer at the moment.  I must decrease the impedance of the bare
resonator,  so that I can reduce coupling,  otherwise insulating becomes
impossible :-(   I observed many of the properties that you mentioned.
