Hi Ralph...
yes you are right it is 1/2 of the dia. of the tube dia. for spacing 
as far as softening  ...  i use 1 screw per tube  and that screw does
get warm and with no means of securing the tube else wise  i felt that
the base material where the screw goes thru would possibly soften/loosen
and the tubes might move , also since there is the intermittent
heat/cool cycles, the nuts could also possibly loosen ( use lock washers
if you have them) other than that im happy with the design :)
