with your present setup you need to

1. use inductive balasting   stay away from resistive ballasts

2. set your primary tap point to about 8 turns to start with

3. set your safty gap to either 1/2 " total (( if you are using a center
ground ... 1/4 "
gap for each side))
     your main gaps set to 3/8 to 1/2 " ( if static)   if rotory ... allow
enuf room for
clearence when spinning

4. be careful with the variac ..  it can cause a resonant factor and create
a surge of
power and amperage draw at various points of operation  (( this varies with
individual coil
designs )

5. dont stick your tounge on the primary when running the coil   ;)
