No problem at all with this idea. I actually run several small TCs using
flyback transformers, the principal is not really any different.
As to diodes, don't rely on a single device, a string of diodes in series is
what you want.Make sure they are all of the same type. Build in a good
safety margin, on a 10kV output flyback circuit, I use ten 1500V 2A diodes.
Don't bother with equalising resistors, modern diodes don't need them.
Connect your primary capacitor between the output of the diode string and
the ground of the coil (make sure you have a safety gap across the
capacitor).
Now carry on as if you were using an NST or OBIT, with the spark gap and
primary coil etc.
