Hi Bart,
When a toroid or sphere is placed on top of a coil, the topload
will show a much lower C than when it is placed on top of an
insulated column.  The closer the toroid or sphere is to the 
top of the coil, the less C the topload will show.  And the wider
the secondary coil is, the less C a given topload will show.
Based on this, your measurements are probably correct.
I think Terry has a computer program available that takes all these
effects into account.
