Yes they did, but its not fair if he hasn't seen that movie. You may try
some very low tech. experiments that will actually control the shape and
length (to a reasonable degree) of the discharge however! Tracking
discharges over insulators is a neat way to get long straight sparks, and if
its real dark, like where you can barely see the insulator, it looks really
cool!  You can track a discharge over weed eater line, twine, string etc.
just stretch it between you topload and a ground rod and maybe spritz it
down with a bit of water, and have at it. The string does catch fire,
though, so be careful. If this is to boring for you though, you may consider
building the "Death Ray Projector" as found on one of Bill Beaty's infamous
pages http://www.amasci-dot-com/freenrg/ideas.html#three . If you still haven't
had enough fun, you could build yourself a gigawatt N2 laser and use the
beam to create an ionized channel for the discharge to follow, capable of
completely destroying anything your twisted little heart desires to point it
at!!!!! Muhahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!
