"I really, really doubt that analog scan-converter tubes would be of
any real use in converting digital TV to NTSC . . . these were
typically thousand-dollar parts (in '60s dollars), not to mention
the cost of the supporting equipment. I would think that a
solid-state converter could be made today for - who knows -
a couple of hundred dollars. The conventional claim from the
comsumer-electronics industry is that such devices will be
available when needed.

Yes, a lot of us have money tied up in, say, libraries of VHS
tapes!

I suspect that a high-end PC video card has a lot more stuff in it than
needed for this application and that the production price of a
suitably-configured scan converter would be comparable, perhaps less as
the quantities increased. Every reason to believe that "such devices
will be available". Of course, this says nothing of the relative
entertainment values of NTSC and digital TV. Lousy programs will be
equally lousy in either format and just as prevalent.
