  I agree that it would be preferable not to convert  a working sander
if it can be avoided, and a report will definitely be forthcoming
this summer.  My wife and I, and four children (triplets plus
one...all under two years!) live in an apartment in Manhattan, which
is not good for constructing giant high voltage devices.  In the
summer however we spend weekends at a shared family house out in the
country where I keep all my high voltage gear.  I've done a lot of
coiling and stuff out there, and I think a VDG would be an
interesting next project.  Anyway for some fun arcs and sparks, drop
