If the rods are conductive, forget them. It would be impractical
to add enough insulation without adding weight. I have made a lifter
using folded strips of Mylar foil (in "L") as supports. Strong
and lightweight, and perfect insulation.
Note that your experiment shall be done with lifters having the same
weight.
