I've had the very same problems, our ring main is protected by a 32 amp
breaker and occasionally mannaged to trip it. In the design of my new power
cabinet i'm including a small timer circuit to operate two relays in series.
The first connects the mains via a 100 ohm resistor and then the second
relay pulls in 250 mS later to apply the full voltage to the variac. I hope
this works as my wife is getting tired of being plunged into darkness
whenever i switch on the variac.
