I paid $20 for my other frequency counter a year or so ago.  My signal
generator and frequency counter are an inseperable pair.  Strictly
speaking, if all you're looking for is sparks, the counter isn't
necessary...just tune your secondary and primary to have peaks at the same
frequency on the dial (allowing for the primary detuning previously
mentioned).  The counter is necessary when you want to start measuring
things qualitatively.
