Tungsten Sources / Tungsten Gaps

Hello!

http://www.lvstrings-dot-com/menu8.htm
is a link to some spark gaps for Tesla Coils made of 2% thoriated tungsten
1/8" diameter bar stock, with finned heat sinks.
The mentioned Fischer gaps were perhaps the best designed spark gaps ever!
They are quiet, beautiful, and can run all day! Pictures of those machines
can be found under "Diathermy Machines" from

It's a real bugger to cut, you need preferrably an abrasive saw (with lots
of cutting discs & coolant!) or a diamond saw. Can't machine it worth a
darn, but similar to what one gentleman said if you spin it in a lathe or
drill press and have an abrasive disc to "face" it against you can get a
somewhat smooth ground finish. I have also had fair results with a diamond
grinder used for forming carbide lathe tools.
For small coils tungsten contacts like those used in the high frequency
testers and "Violet Rays" work well. You may find them for a few dollars
each these days, they are .187" in diameter, and brazed to a small 2-56
bolt. Brass threaded rod can be drilled and tapped for a 2-56 bolt without
too much difficulty, providing you have a lathe. Does anyone know where to
get 3/8" tungsten contacts??
