Hi again Bill:

In my opinion, and I could be wrong, I wouldn't want the safety gap
ground and the NST ground separate from the secondary ground.
However, as I said previously, it should be separate from the power
cord ground which should be connected to all exposed metal of your
variac and other control box switches, etc. as well as the E.M.I.
filter ground terminal.

With regards to an isolation transformer, your NST's actually serve
that purpose in their normal configuration, as there is no direct
connection between the primary and the secondary. If it would make
you feel better, you could use one to provide more isolation, but
keep in mind that it would need a KVA rating equal to or larger
than your coils input power.
