Terry,

I am very interested in your analysis on this circuit.  I am just about ready 
to try it with my 3.0" coil and new sync rotary gap - using a 1/3 H.P. motor. 
 What is the purpose of R3 - is it just to draw some steady current through 
the variac?  It looks like it needs to be about 300 watts.
