I also live in La.   Kenner to be exact...    ( just outside of New
Orleans)  and
inserting a ground rod was a mere matter of pushing down on the rod till 2"
was left
exposed (( very soft ground here  more like wet coffie grounds :) ))

If you are in northern La .. you will have to deal with firmer soil ...
try using a
length of pipe with a garden hose attached to it to "wet drill" a hole first

depending upon the size of your coil ( medium size will work with 4' of rod
) you can see
acceptable results with shorter rods
