Ralph,

If you mounted your static gap tubes horizontally instead of vertically on 
longish machine screws, couldn't you just raise or lower every other tube to 
make a sort of single-mounting-plate version of the Scott D. gap?  I don't 
know that this is much of an improvement over your vertical mount system, but 
avoids the (necessarily precise) step of ovalizing the tubes.  Just a 
thought...
