Plate transformers are not current limited.  This has two implications:
1) Depending on the original rating, you might get as much as double the
current out, for short times.  Depends if the transformer is rated for CCS
(Continuous Commercial Service) or ICAS (Intermittent Commercial and Amateur
Service).  Temperature is your guide.
2) You'll need some form of ballasting.

Think of a plate transformer as similar to a pole pig.. In your case, about
4kVA.  The big difference is that pole pigs are incredibly tough and
overdesigned, because they are designed to sit out in the elements on a
power pole for 40 years. Plate transformers generally sit in a piece of
equipment in an airconditioned room, etc.
