How are ignition coils wired?

How are car ignition coils wired internally? I'm
talking about the old-style, 3-terminal,
cylinder-shaped coil with a (+) and (-) terminal and a
HV tower in the middle. One HV lead goes to the HV
tower. The other HV lead goes to which 12V terminal?
(+) or (-)?
