Not necessarily correct. I had a serious explosion here once while
pulling the clips of a 12V truck battery which hadn't been charged in a
couple of weeks. It was inside a wooden box with one side open.....
Fortunately no one hurt.

I've been involved with three storage battery explosions over the
years. The first occurred while the batteries (32V bank) were
charging. The second occurred while I was using a 2V 20AH plastic cased
cell to heat the filament of a high-voltage rectifier tube. Somehow or
other there was a spark to the inside of the battery and it exploded,
showering polystyrene case and acid all over the garage AND ONTO MY
FOLKS' CAR!!!!!! This was about 2 in the morning, and I didn't realize
there was acid on the car. The paint had intresting spots on it forever
after.

Bottom line is to be very careful with storage batteries in even
remotely confined spaces.
