The spiral in the picture was about 13" in diameter wound with 21 gage wire.
An 18" coil wound with 18 gage wire should give good results.  Winding
between two plastic plates will work.  If the insulation is heavy on the
outside of the 18 gage wire you may even get better results than winding
with magnet wire.  Use 1/4" Plexiglas to wind your coil between.  You'll
need all the dielectric you can get.

The spiral coil can be grounded or not, there is not much difference in
performance.
