when a MOT dies

I found an OLD 500 watt microwave, and I took the 2100VAC XMFR out of it and
hooked it up to 120V, and tried to arc the + to -. I got a tiny 2"
electrical flame and the transformer began to sing and turn into a super
powerful electromagnet. It died soon after.

When MOT's are about to die, you can actually hear a change in pitch and you
will notice the primary begin to vibrate radically, eventually you will pop
the breaker. On a good standard MOT, the transformer has a STEADY 60Hz tone,
and you should be able to pull a good 6" to 8" electrical flame between +
and - with a 2kV tranny.

If you aren't getting these arcs or close to it, chuck the MOT out or rewire
it!! The primary is most likely burned up.
