Hi Steve,

sounds like you are quite a bit off on the timing ...  ( plus its not a 
really good idea to run the coil without the secondary, alot of the 
power is kicked back into the primary and if you have the cap/primary 
tuned well it will reach some impressive voltages in that part of the 
circuit and your caps will be unhappy and then you will be unhappy ;)  )

also ......   what I have found is that if your plug that supplies 
electricity to the SRSG is able to be plugged in "the other way" it will 
make a difference in the timing............


do you have a variac?

if you do, use it at a low setting ( just enuf to get the SRSG to fire 
when it is off and the electrodes are lined up) , next turn on the SRSG 
and rotate the motor in its cradle untill you get some spark gap action 
on the SRSG ( this will take several tries of turning the system on and 
off and rotating the motor in its cradle untill you get spark gap action 
again). You really dont want to do this rotating adjustment while the 
coil is running....   you might get zapped...

This should be very close to the peak of the sine wave of the AC side. 
You may need to rotate the motor a bit more forward or behind ( about 10 
degrees) to find the optimal position.

the safety gap should be about 2 to 3 times the width of the gap in the 
SRSG .... for a safe setting ( you can go wider but it reduces the 
ability of the safety gap to fire when it needs to )

try this and let us know what the news is
