Microwave Oven Capacitors - Testing

Original poster: "Matthew Smith by way of Terry Fritz <twftesla-at-qwest-dot-net>" <matt-at-kbc-dot-net.au>

Hi All

Further to the recent views of Greg Hunter's wonderful new MOT-based
PSU, I would moot the following question:

Since the failure of microwave ovens is very often due to a faulty
capacitor, how should we test salvaged units?

My own thoughts are:
1) Check capacity with suitable DMM/capacitance bridge against value
specified on can.
2) [only caps without in-built bleeder resistor] test with 500V Megger,
or equivalent: after cap has charged, reading should swing to high Mohms
(am I right?)

Cheers

M
