Actually I was wanting to try this to see what would happen. You can get
copper clad iron wire. If there was a couple of skin depths of copper the
iron shouldn't see much in the way of eddy currents. Maybe in that respect
it wouldn't have any influence on the magnetic field either.
Certainly straight iron would not be good.
